Lifetime of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Most Affluent 10%, Report Says

Per fresh analysis, the median earner in the UK would need half a century of earnings to achieve the net worth of the most affluent 10% of the population.

Growing Economic Disparity Across Decades

The study examined financial assets information covering the 2020-22 timeframe and found that in 2006-08, it would have required 38 years of typical employment income to reach the richest segment of the wealth distribution.

A research lead part of the study observed: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a regular employee saving all their earnings throughout their career would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the wealth ladder."

Measuring the Financial Disparity

The study revealed that the disparity between the wealth of the median citizen and an individual in the top 10% was £1m in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by recent times.

The analyst continued: "These gaps are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life affluent tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Despite the wealth gap expanding in actual numbers, the percentage of total wealth in the UK held by the wealthiest families – termed "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," per the research.

Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Drivers of Wealth Inequality

Referred to as "passive" appreciation, through increasing property values and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the primary factors of the expanding economic divide over the past decade, according to the study.

These increases tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Financial Divides

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in actual value, from £135,000 in pre-financial crisis, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Disparities

Additionally, there were stark geographic differences, with the average level of net worth in recent years reaching £290,000 in the SE of England, where property prices have tended to rise rapidly, compared with £110k in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Consequences

Throughout the COVID period, when countless laborers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns curtailed consumption options, the information reveals many households were able to save, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, though. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
