Trump's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Donald Trump's voracious appetite for revenge has rapidly morphed into a methodical apparatus. During the past year, the president's fury and whims have taken on the shape of official policies in a manner comparable to earlier dictatorial governments. Government personnel who do not cooperate are immediately fired and succeeded by devotees. Political officials who question him risk prosecution, judicial process and punishment. Critics have been labeled under executive memoranda as “anti-American”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and menaced with prosecution as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Restructured

All instance involving targeting of Trump's enemies and immunity for supporters demonstrates its own distinct characteristics. However, regardless of their individual character, they exemplify manifestations of what has developed as a systematic technique. Those episodes are not isolated. His cleansing of Department of Justice attorneys and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, accompanied by his installation of supporters in senior roles, commenced swiftly, promptly developed a regularity, and has now been shaped into a system. Federal prosecutors and the Federal Bureau have been remade into political agencies under the president's explicit direction to carry out his wishes. Wrongdoing has been rendered routine. It constitutes the retribution system.

Management is more concerned with targeting the President's perceived adversaries than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Within the Apparatus

The beginnings of this mechanism has been exposed in the court filing of several ex- high-ranking Federal Bureau agents submitted in September in the US district court in DC against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head a key figure for illegal termination in “a initiative of revenge against Plaintiffs for what Defendants considered to be a refusal to exhibit sufficient allegiance”. The document states that a former acting director, the former acting FBI director, details a conversation in which Patel “publicly acknowledged the illegality of his behavior”.

He had attempted to defend law enforcement officers from being dismissed, the filing alleges. The director told him that “White House figures” – understood by him to be the presidential administration and justice department – had directed him to dismiss anyone who they determined as having participated in a law enforcement case against him. The filing goes on: “He clarified that he had to terminate the personnel his leaders told him to dismiss, because his chance to keep his own job depended on the removal of the agents who handled matters involving the President. The director explained that there was nothing he or him could do to stop these or any other terminations, because ‘the agency attempted to incarcerate the leader in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” When Driscoll advised him he was breaking the agency's own regulations, Patel reportedly said “he recognized that and he knew the nature of the summary firings were almost certainly unlawful”.

Extensive Consequences

Since the director's alleged acknowledgment to the official, the DoJ and the FBI have been weakened and repurposed for his retribution system. Several of the FBI's high-ranking agents were dismissed or pushed out in the first days of the presidency. Approximately thousands of lawyers at DoJ have accepted a “deferred resignation program”. At least multiple government attorneys, such as those in the southern district of New York, quit in protest over what they regarded as political interference in dropping the legal action against the city leader, a political figure, in exchange for his cooperation with his Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of migrants. The anti-corruption unit of DoJ, which handles corruption cases, has been diminished to two attorneys. The rights protection unit has been devastated: seventy percent of its personnel has resigned. A third of top officials at the justice department have quit. The section upholding ecological regulations has experienced the exit of a majority its management.

Incentives and Punishments

In the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, the official, resigned in protest against what she characterized as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, the president's “immigration leader,” was present as the implementer with the mayor on a media outlet to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll be back in NYC.”. And, a former official, formerly the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who arranged the deal, was given an court role, a likely pathway to the highest court.

Trump's protection for crimes committed while in office, granted by the unprecedented judgment of the conservative on the judicial body, thus thwarting his prosecution over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his electoral prospects for the 2024 election, is the foundation stone on which he depends to protect his stalwarts. With such immunity, he has been freed to authorize corruption. The impact of the judicial ruling infuses his administration and the political party completely. Trump v United States has metastasized. As a past leader's White House counsel he said about the Watergate
